African Art Paintings was founded by Joanna Mbeke, a self taught
artist and art consultant currently based in London, UK. Our aim is to
establish a solid platform where artists of the African diaspora can
showcase and promote their artworks as individuals not as "African"

What is African Art? Contemporary art from Africa has always been
cliched and often focused too much attention on older masters whilst
ignoring the raw and new talents that have been emerging. Many
artists of African descent prefer not to be labeled as an "African"
Artists but rather simply as an individual "artist". At the same time
these artists also face challenges in promoting their works in the west
as an individual unless they adopt the "African" label. Contemporary
art from Africa is not only about the traditional tribal elements but also
the ever changing modern aspects of African societies today which
may also carry heavy outside influence.
